In 2024, CSIRO and ATTMA published a landmark study, measuring the airtightness of hundreds of houses and apartments across several states, attempting to characterise typical construction in Australia. The findings surprised many. While the average was quite far from Passivhaus, it was still an improvement of over 50% from a similar 2015 study. What changes in practice and materials led to such massive gains in just a decade? What will it take to make similar leaps in the coming decade? The study revealed many key opportunities for change, and we are running out of time to change standard practice. What fundamental principles can the Passivhaus community engrain in the minds of the common builder? If we want to change the world, we need to take the masses along with us.
Key learning outcomes
- Learn where the performance of typical Australian construction lies, and how far it is from Passivhaus.
- Learn how common practice has markedly improved over a decade, in line with greater adoption of Passivhaus principles.
- Acknowledge the balance of risks in high-performance construction.
- Identify key risk-mitigation strategies used by Passivhaus, such as thermal bridging mitigation, building airtightness, smart materials choice, and ventilation.
- Identify ways to convey these risk mitigation strategies to common builders so they can avoid problems and increase their receptiveness to Passivhaus principles.
